The Canon of Dissonance

<Lady-X>, a solo exhibition by Jang Pa, is like a kind of magnificent portrait which takes a thorough look into the artist’s inner world. Even the structure of the exhibition, which leads the viewer from the first floor to 1st floor basement, then to the painting <Lady-X>(2015) located in the innermost section of the 2nd floor basement, gradually lulls the viewer to the artist’s internal world. Jang Pa’s claim that the series Lady-X deals with the girl’s sexual fantasy or the journey to female sexuality only just refers to the outer façade of the work: upon closer inspection, she rips and gouges out and strips away the façade in the boldest yet the most delicate, and cruel but the most beautiful way.

While the artist questions if genuine understanding of and love for another is attainable in the Lady-X series, she has never once stepped out of her shell; rather, she seems to withdraw deeper inside her skin. Understanding of the other becomes possible with thorough understanding of the ego, or the self, and thus the artist continuously explores and observes herself, hovering and floating over freely across the boundary between inside and outside, male and female, and self and others. Therefore, she probably needed a certain set of fixed coordinates or reference points, and they became manifest as trees, vanishing points, triangles, or skulls and female body in her paintings, videos and photographs.

In her work, Jang Pa openly reveals various psychological conditions suppressed in the unconsciousness. A Secret Room of Plants(2009) captures the artist’s surrounding through the perspective of an observer, expressing complex emotions like anxiety, guilt, and hatred, as aggressive spurts of reds and purples hidden on the other side of the almost stiflingly fresh green. Jang Pa portrayed helplessness through the de-saturated black and white video in The End of the World(2011), and in The World until Yesterday(2013), she perpetuates her worries and countless challenges despite her prediction of failure, in order to maintain her balance and state in such helpless condition. However, such emotions are presented in a deliberate cooled-off state unlike the emotions charged in A Secret Room of Plants.

The impassioned, aggressively sharp lines in paintings and drawings in A Secret Room of Plants and Lady-X series are transformed into a lifeless, calm and almost cynical state in the paintings, animations, videos and photographs in the series The End of the World and The World until Yesterday. While such change might seem to present two completely different states, it might reflect the artist’s efforts to instinctively find a balance between the multiple ‘self/other’ which abruptly appears inside and outside of her. In between reality and the painting, and in the world of painting, the artist is endlessly engaged in a role play of the observer and the observed; however, the only things is, the order of the parts in this canon is not determined.

When looking at Jang Pa’s work with a jumble of gazes, even I drift inside and outside of her works and eventually end up looking at the work from neither inside nor outside but somewhere ambiguously in the middle. And the differentiation of the inside and outside depends on my decision as to whether I will be an observer outside of the painting, or stay inside the painting and merge into the subject of the painting. While the viewer and the artist couldn’t willingly enter the painting in the Secret Room of Plants series, the pressure to do so becomes more intense in Lady-X. I decided to first look at the work from the outside. The plants held bondage in A Secret Room of Plants came out into the woods, and I can see better in the woods. I become an observer of my own self again, yet it feels like I keep on escaping deeper into the woods.

I tie myself around with ropes and tree branches, and try to grapple someone’s shadows in order to contain myself that’s being chased, but nothing works. I ask myself if it’s me who’s trying to grasp onto something or if it’s them that’s trying to grasp me, and feeling frustrated, I decide to enter the painting a little bit more. Everything is in red, and then at some point, the woods seem to enter my inner world. I try hard to push it away, but it clusters and sticks onto every part of my body, with a sense of stickiness that is very unpleasant and disgusting. I’m just barely able to push something that occupies my guts out through the holes in my body, and when that’s not enough, I cut my skin to get it out. Then I dig holes and bury it, and if that’s still not enough, I’ll just have to leave the painting.

The form sitting on the tree branch in the upper part of the center of the painting and gazing out in My Little Riot Girl(2015) no longer contains anything in itself except for an expression. Emptied out clean, the form seems to have drained everything inside outside, and sitting there nonchalant to the chaos outside of the painting, content, satisfied and strangely mocking us. On the other hand, the form sitting in a similar position on the lower right corner seems to sit with emotions not yet completely drained out of itself, with expression of fear and regret, gazing at neither outside nor inside the painting but somewhere in between with shaky eyes. The closer one tries to look at its expression, the more broken up it looks.

It looks like it’s time for me to enter the painting again, as the feelings of unpleasantness and disgust has now subsided somewhat. I feel like I performed a good act of exorcism. I don’t think the fresh blood-splattered earth, filled with energy of death and darkness, and the woods, no longer green, will be a problem anymore. The woods is no longer the way it was before. However, fear and anxiety is inevitable because I/artist try to solve a puzzle that’s impossible and thus with predictable outcome. Was I ultimately hurt and distressed by the things that are innately in me? I come to surface, through the repetition of emerging and vanishing through the other in me and the other outside of me.

The vibrant orange color running down the groin in Lady-X(2015) gives us some kind of euphoria and delight. Whether it’s a visual pleasure or a psychological one, I become Lady-X as well as the other who is gazing at her. Now, in my mind, I’m drawing my own ‘Lady-X’, or the future ‘Lady-X’. I might no longer need a certain form, as the woods, trees, skulls and female bodies might be mashed down to mush, into mere colors and traces of brush strokes. The red energy in me has become diluted and faded, and has been left in A Secret Room (2012-2015).

Jang Pa’s canon seems to release wavelengths of unsteady rhythm, but a certain part of the wavelengths is bound to coincide with that of the viewer, even if it’s just for a moment. That part might be a few seconds for some, and quite a long time for others before it all goes dissonant again. The question “Is genuine understanding of and love for the other truly attainable?,” which the artist throws in Lady-X series, is actually reflected in her oeuvre comprehensively. Perhaps her question might already be suggesting that such understanding and love for the other is unattainable. What is for sure though is that in Jang Pa’s painting, one can experience beyond the boundary between the self and the other, even if it’s just for momentarily.

<My Little Riot Girl>(2015)에서 화면 중앙의 위쪽 나뭇가지 위에 앉아서 화면 바깥을 응시하고 있는 형상은 더 이상 아무것도 담고 있지 않고 표정만이 남아 있다.
